Sjögren’s Syndrome is the second most common autoimmune rheumatic disease and nine out of ten sufferers are female. It is characterised by inflammation within the secretory glands causing dryness of the eyes and mouth and elsewhere. Other common symptoms include arthritis, fatigue and joint pain. Sjögren’s Syndrome has a significant impact on quality of life and the diagnosis is often delayed. No cure currently exists for the condition and the cause remains unknown. The British Sjögren’s Syndrome Association (BSSA) is a registered charity, which aims to raise awareness of the disease and support research into its cause and treatment. As a self-help organisation, it is dedicated to providing mutual support and information to individuals affected by the disease.
